Platform Musings...

I took this photo because I love arches and the light at the end of the tunnel aspect is also in there somewhere, too.

This is Darlington station where passengers once stood in a wooden shed fit, (in today's terms) for only a garden spade, while waiting for the arrival of their coach; a coach pulled along the rails not by an engine, but by horses.

It was on September, 27th 1825 that George Stephenson's steam engine, "Locomation", hauled 34 wagons and a coach carrying directors and shareholders along the new line. Twelve wagons were laden with coal, another with flour, one with surveyors and engineers and twenty with 450 excited passengers making it the world's first steam-powered passenger service.

A little information courtesy of Darlington Development Company while waiting for my Intercity train to take me home after visiting my parents. 180 years is not that long really is it, but think how much technology has changed on this one aspect alone; we have gone from horse-drawn to high speed inter-city with internet connection to keep you in touch with business and friends while you travel, erm. if you can get a seat that is.
