dark sentinels that stood in line and waited
as if to be counted, acknowledged
"We are here, as we have always been.
We are the guardians."
Just a line of trees on a cloudy day when the light was low, but there was a moment as I walked when the light seemed to shimmer, to change and shadows shifted. A moment when I heard a soft murmuring among the trees, a low susurrus when I felt no breeze, and a voice crept unbidden into my mind,
"We are here..."
so I turned and looked again at that line of trees; dark, silent, motionless.
Just a line of trees in the half-light...?

what are they lining up for? :P
Poplars growing alongside a road look as if they are ready to march down it. They serve a good purpose for the crops grown in your area, so yes they are the sentinels of the fields.
See davem's comment neko :) they serve as windbreaks in this case. Thanks davem :-)
Those trees might have been singing, "Every bond you break,
every step you take, I'll be watching you." Ooh, shivers!
Interestingly enough, the Spanish verb for "to whisper" is 'sussurar'.
OK, maybe it's not that interesting...
Nice words, Sandy.
Haha thanks Velvet that song is a great match and you have just inspired me with a new post. :-)
It is a lovely word Janet a whisper in itself. :-)
Thanks tc, and that is interesting, I've been told Spanish is a beautiful language when you come to know it. :)
Tsk, you should know, Sandy, that there are never, no-not-ever, such a thing as "just trees" ;-) :-)
They watch they wait, the hold out their leaves with a thirsty thirst, all green and waiting for the blue. The shiver and they sing and they listen. The know the north wind that carries the rain from the ocean. The watched the mountains grow and shift. Saw the ice come and go and passed on the knowledge to the younger trees. The grow in rings. Their roots go deep into the delicious black earth and listen to it's pulse. They are the keepers and the guardians. They are home and hope to birds and they are known by the druids and they are friends of the fey and the elvish folk that live in the hills.
Just trees, oh no, not ever. Shame on you!
