They said he was a strange boy. But that was a long while ago and some folk thought a little differently then. Maybe it was because he kept himself to himself, spent too much time in the hills, but he was just a quiet, gentle boy who loved nature. They say his mother was bewitched, that she had gone into the woods at midnight, that she had ensnared the moon in an enchanted pool. That she had sworn she would leave the night in darkness unless she were given a child.

And because his eyes held all the woodland shades of green and he talked to trees, some even said his mother had lain with a wood sprite; they said he was an elfin child. Maybe it is so, maybe that is why the birds showed no fear and came to him. Creatures show no fear of Elvin folk and it is common knowledge that they inhabit trees.

When he died his children buried him somewhere in the hills, in a quiet, secret place; somewhere peaceful where he could see the hills and the open sky, be among the trees he loved so much.

They say that a great tree grew in that spot. That if you go into the hills you'll see the tree. Its a very big tree, taller than all the rest, his face looks up at the hills. You shouldn't miss it really, being so tall, looking like a man, but when you get among the trees you can't see above the canopy in some places, and one trunk can soon look like another, so you'd have to go up high, really high, I should think. You'd have to look closely then, and of course you would have to believe.

But who would believe such nonsense.

It took a few minutes for me to find the face, but now that I've seen those eyes, it's hard to take my own away from them. Sandy, you write such wonderful stories. They make me feel the same kind of magic I felt as a child, curled up on the sofa with a book of fairy tales. As if all things are possible.

Female *hug* Velvet thank you. :-)
The eyes are what captured me too, once the face is there it is hard to deny it. The story told itself. :)
